Tate Gallery, Liverpool **** The highlight of our visit to The Tate at Liverpool was Anthony Gormley's “The
Field” – 35000 brick sized, terracotta stones which are each sculptured to give them a head and eyes and stood
on end. It is a stunning work created by about 500 people. I imagine that the
effect is similar to that of a pop star gazing down to thousands of eyes at a stadium gig.
The Field was at the gallery as an exhibition. The permanent collection meanwhile contains
modern paintings, sculptures and video installations which are often provocative and political. All very much worth visiting. Seen by me: 3.5.04 (with
Naomi)
Tate Modern, London **** My first proper visit to London's very impressive
new gallery. Successfully arranged by theme rather than period, I'm especially impressed by the large, highly political paintings
of Fougenon (a new name to me) and a few other works. Many of the works are not to my taste and / or pretentious and awful
but the overall layout and building are very impressive. A good use of Lottery money. Visited: 25.1.02
